Aim of the lesson: to teach tech related vocabulary and practice speaking using it
Length of the lesson: 45 minutes

Lead-in (5 minutes)

Do you have a computer/laptop/tablet at home?
How often do you use it?
What do you use it for?

Reading (14 minutes)

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools.
The Raspberry Pi computer has a 700 MHz processor, a graphic card, and 256 megabytes of RAM memory. It does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, but it uses an SD card for booting and persistent storage.
Initial sales were of the Model B, with Model A following in early 2013. Model A has just one port for peripherals to be connected and no Ethernet controller, and costs less than the Model B with two ports for peripherals and a an Ethernet controller.
Raspberry Pi computers are manufactured in the UK, at Sony’s manufacturing facility in Pencoed, Wales. The Foundation estimated that the plant would produce 30,000 units per month, and would create about 30 new jobs. In October 2012 it was reported that some customers of one of the two main distributors had been waiting more than six months for their orders.

  2. Read the paragraph again and answer the following question by marking the correct answer with “C”: (3 minutes)

    Model A
    Model B (C)
    Model C

    Doesn’t say (C)

Writing/Speaking (23 minutes)

In written form answer the following questions:

Spend 5 minutes to introduce to learners the topic of the lesson by asking few tech related questions.

Many young learners use their smartphone for social networking, games etc. Related questions might work very well.

Ask students to read the paragraph and underline three words they don’t know then ask them to write the words on the board. Possible words on the board: single-board, foundation, intention, MHz, processor, graphic card, RAM memory, initial, port, peripherals, facility, plant. Some of the words are known by some students, so they can explain the meaning to the whole class; if not, the teacher explains the meaning of the words (flash cards can be used since most of the words are nouns).
Ask students to read the paragraph again and answer the question (pair work). Reading again might not be necessary!
Ask students to read the paragraph again and answer the questions (pair work). The questions are multiple-choice format. Tell students that only one answer is true.

Ask students to answer the questions. The questions can be answered in written form or spoken form according to the aim of the lesson. It is a good idea to arrange students in pairs or groups and have them write down brief answers of the questions before the speaking activity.
