Things I don’t like doing | Why-Because | ESL/EFL Lesson Plan

The purpose of the lesson: Ask for and give reasons, why – because
Size of the class: 40 students
Age: 14 years old/grade 8
Level: Beginner/A1
Length of the lesson: 40 minutes

Stage 1

This is a two stage lesson that starts with a simple and nice presentation. The teacher presents five things he/she doesn’t like doing (as a Power Point presentation – picture, written text, spoken model) giving the reasons as well (I don’t like ... because ...) The students have to produce something similar based on the provided model.

Below is what the presentation contains (without pictures).

Things I don’t like doing:
Ironing clothes (because doesn’t matter how much I try, they still look ugly).
Washing vegetable (because takes too long time and I don’t have patience).
Riding the motorbike in Vietnam (because I don’t ride the bike, I just avoid accidents).
Attending wedding if I don’t know anyone (because everybody asks me the same questions, it’s so annoying).
Going to dentist (because the pain is extreme, more than that, it is very expensive).

Stage 2

The lesson looks simple at the first view but the lack of vocabulary (and/or imagination) might be a real problem. In this second part of the lesson, the students have to write down three things they don’t like doing then present them to the whole class; they also have to tell the reasons.

In order to make things easier, I’ll ask students to work in pairs (combined ideas might have a better result). More than that, I am going to provide a little bit of help that can be seen at the end of the presentation (see below) and an overview of the things presented by the teacher (with the reasons) are also visible on the board.

Possible things a fourteen year old teen doesn’t like doing:
Being told “You are still a child”
Learning a foreign language
Being asked “what do you want to be in the future?”
Bad grades
Cleaning my room
Waking up early
Not having money
Being fat
Classical music
Wearing school’s uniform

Telling why you don’t like doing something is quite difficult and it requires a lot of vocabulary. Hopefully, at the end, the students will be able to write down three things they don’t like doing, explain why, and present them to the whole class.
